WIPpet Wednesday – Jan 20th

I am 99.99.99 % done with Book 1 MS and ready to jump into my second MS, which needs a whole lot of reworking and revising. So fun…:/ But if you write, you understand. I love my characters and I love their stories. My desire is to someday have other people fall in love with their stories, too. Someday.

Onto WIPpet Wednesday. Thanks to A Keyboard and an Open Mind for hosting WIPet Wednesdays. It’s a great way for bloggers to connect and share work with each other 🙂 If you want to join in, feel free to post your link here.

I have a scene from my second MS. I posted scenes out of order so forgive me. You can find previous excerpts from Chapter 1 and 2 from Waters of peace (working title…which I have no idea what to do with) here and here.

Today I have 16 paragraphs for you, (because it’s 2016 and it fits with this excerpt 🙂

Context: Joel and Lacey are driving home. They’re talking about Jessica’s car accident.

Edit: I do not know why it squishes all the paragraphs together, when in draft form they’re separated. Tried to resolve it but no luck. Sorry 🙂

“Why didn’t you tell me she got into a car accident?”
Why is it that I suddenly care so much?
“She didn’t even tell me until tonight,” Lacey snapped at him, leaning her head against the window. “She lied to me, Joel. This morning, after we left for class, she lied to me about why Chris was taking her to school. She never lies to me,” The dejected tone of her voice sent a wave of sadness through the car.
“I’m sorry,” Joel spoke quietly.
“I don’t know what’s gotten into her,” Lacey sighed.
They were both silent until he pulled into the driveway. Following Lacey inside the house, Joel ventured another question that had been burning in the back of his mind all day.
“What about this morning? How was she? After what happened?” Lacey stopped halfway down the hall, half-turning toward him.
“She’s fine, she says,” That’s it? Joel frowned. “I tried to talk to her, but she wouldn’t talk to me about anything. Except to say, that she wants you to stay out of her business,” He leaned back against the wall. “I guess she thinks there was nothing wrong with what happened this morning,” Joel could hear the sarcasm dripping in Lacey’s tone. At least she feels the same way I do.
There is absolutely something wrong with the way Jessica is being treated.
“Is he always like that? Rude? Controlling?”
“The few times I’ve met him…yes,” Joel rubbed his face with one hand.
Lacey met Joel’s gaze. “I think what you did was wonderful.” She affirmed his actions. He gave a brief smile.
“Thanks,” he murmured.
“Thank you for giving her a ride,” He nodded. “I’m exhausted. Goodnight.”
Joel leaned against the wall for a long time after Lacey went to bed. Thoughts of the conversation he’d had with Jessica’s boyfriend that morning flashed through his mind; he’d seen the way Chris glared at Jessica when he’d made his presence known—the authoritative way he’d reproved her accusingly, as if she somehow knew Joel, as if Joel presented a threat to him.
No wonder she wants me to stay out of her business. She must think I’m a threat because he thinks I’m a threat. He recalled the threatening tone in Chris’ voice; his warning to stay away from his girl. How did I not recognize this sooner?
If I agree to give her rides, I could be putting her in danger…

Ooo… That is squishy. I’m sorry about that. I hope it cooperates for you next week.

I hope Lacey and Joel can help Jessica somehow.
