Warrior’s Heart: The Frontier Hearts Saga book 3 by Colleen Hall
About the Book
Della Hunter is struggling to adjust to her new life as a widow and be a single parent to her young son. Her world is further complicated when the man she almost married seven years before rides back into her life.
Wild Wind, her late husband’s half-brother, is a Cheyenne chieftain and a Dog Soldier of fearsome reputation. He no longer fights the soldiers, but he can’t tolerate a life on the reservation, so he makes the dangerous trek into the white man’s world. He comes to the Slash L looking for work. As he takes his brother’s place training horses on the Slash L ranch, he must navigate two cultures and make his way in a society hostile to the tribes. During the years they were separated, his love for Della never wavered. While she grieves for Shane, he determines to woo and win her. Can he bridge the gap between his two worlds, and can he find it in his heart to love Della’s God as she does?
What inspired you to write this story?
Warrior’s Heart is the book that I didn’t plan to write. Book #3 in my Frontier Hearts Saga was supposed to feature another character, but as I tried to develop a story around this person, nothing happened. While I was struggling to develop the story, Wild Wind (a character readers meet in Wounded Heart, Book #2) was in my head demanding that I tell his story. He wouldn’t let me go.
Finally, I scrapped the initial story idea and gave in to Wild Wind. Once I let him have his way, a story line began to develop. I created a love interest for him named Rose. However, Rose wouldn’t come to life. I couldn’t get her off the paper, and Wild Wind refused to love her. Wild Wind had already met and fallen in love with a woman in Book #2, and he now refused to love anyone else. This created a problem, since between Books 2 and 3, the woman Wild Wind loved had married another man. Wild Wind is such a strong character that he wouldn’t budge on loving anyone else, and I couldn’t make him love another woman.
So, for Book #3, I had to make his love interest a widow and free her to love Wild Wind, which meant that I had to rework parts of the plot. Once I gave in to Wild Wind on this final point, the story came together and flew off the page. I guess I could say that Wild Wind really wrote Warrior’s Heart! His steadfast love for the heroine despite their being separated for years showed his commitment to the love of his heart.
