Christian Fiction Friday is a blog hop where authors post short (400-ish words or less) snippets from their current works in progress (not published pieces)
If you write Christian fiction or otherwise clean fiction you are welcome to join in! I would love to grow this little weekly blog hop and get to know other writers out there. We all need morale support!
It’s easy to join in!
1. Post a comment below with a link to your excerpt
2. Keep it PG-13 or lower please. No swearing, no sex scenes. If you have a particularly violent scene or deal with a heavy or controversial subject matter, please include a disclaimer at the beginning of your post.
3. Try to visit at least a few other posts.
Is it the end of April already?? Man, how time flies.
I have posted quite a few excerpts here over the last several months. You can find them under the Excerpt category link. If you have time and all that 🙂
Because of a MAJOR plot twist in my first book, I haven’t been posting excerpts past that point. So, I’ve been sticking with Book 2 excerpts. If you have no idea what Book 2 in my Second Chances series is about, please read the synopsis. Although, I am going to be rewriting that synopsis sometime in the next couple of weeks.
Context: Joel, his sister Lacey, and their friends attend a mid-week christian college group. Lacey’s friend Serena is attending for the first time tonight. This is from Joel’s POV.
Jay and Lacey stood nearby, talking with friends. Jenna waved and ran off to greet Lacey. All of this was normal—routine even. Joel expected Serena to follow, to stick by Lacey’s side, as she had done every single time they went anywhere together in the past.
Tonight, however, she chose to remain by his side. He eyed Lacey at one point, but she smiled at him and returned to her conversation.
While he did not mind Serena’s company—thoroughly enjoyed it, in fact—self-consciousness began to creep in. He brushed those feelings aside for now and introduced her to his friends.
She remained silent while they conversed. At one point, she touched his arm; a shot of heat he wasn’t expecting ran through his veins. Her body leaning close to his didn’t help matters.
“Does anyone know why I am living with you guys?” she whispered close to his ear. He glanced at her as she pulled away, and held her gaze for a few beats. He shook his head and leaned in, keeping his tone low.
“I haven’t told anyone, except for Matt.” He saw the disappointment flicker across her smooth face.
“And Lacey?” she said. “Did she tell anyone?”
He glanced toward Lacey and Jay with a frown, irritated that Lacey had told Jay anything at all. Unlike last year, they didn’t hang out at his place nearly so often. She had no reason to tell him so soon. But what could he do? They were boyfriend and girlfriend. He decided to let Lacey be the bearer of that news. “You’ll have to ask her,” he answered.
Serena let out a breath and wrapped her arms around herself again. “Why did you tell Matt?” she asked after a moment, her annoyance clearly evident.
As the lights dimmed, indicating service would begin any minute, Joel parted ways with the two he’d been talking with. He led Serena toward open chairs. He leaned in close, keeping his voice low, though the music beginning to play masked their words well enough.
“I was worried about you,” he explained, utterly serious. She glanced away and sat down as Lacey and Jay approached. He couldn’t talk to her any further, nor could he linger and try to decipher her expression, with Lacey and Jay standing right beside them. Exhaling, he let it go.
God, be with her tonight. Let her find peace in You. Assure her that Lacey and I – all we want to do is make sure she’s safe.
I like to try and keep excerpts in order. Come back again to find out more.
I love hearing from you! Leave a comment, and a link with an excerpt if you have one.
